SIIM24 Conference

Photography

Prologue

The 2024 Annual Meeting of the Society for Imaging Informatics in Medicine was held at the Gaylord in National Harbor, Maryland. I was hired through Sagetopia to photograph the three-day event that welcomed hundreds of attendees and exhibitors from around the world.

The client had been disappointed by photographs of previous meetings that were lacking in diversity and enthusiasm. My challenge was to take photographs that would make attendees excited for the next year's meeting and that would reflect the wide variety of people who attend and the rich networking opportunities available.

Process

I prepared for the event by reviewing previous meeting photos that worked as well as those that didn't. I researched the types of photos and shots captured by other event photographers and noted which parts of the conference might create opportunities for those photos.

Throughout the event, I sought out candid networking interactions and slipped into education sessions for shots of attendees listening intently. When switching between locations, I navigated the changes in lighting and adjusted settings and composition to maintain consistent, high-quality photos that look close to the real thing. My editing supported this effort to enhance what was captured naturally in the moment.

Product

The final photos captured the diversity of SIIM's membership, the rich networking opportunities at the annual meeting, and the incredible events and learning sessions during the conference. The photos were used to promote the following year's conference, along with social media posts I crafted, and remain in active use.
