Reading Universe Videos

ANimation

Prologue

Reading Universe, produced by WETA, filmed Timely Talks given by nationally-renowned experts on topics related to teaching children to read.

Because each lecture was about an hour long, we needed to create supporting graphics to add interest and to break up the video.

Work was completed while employed at Sagetopia.

Process

Given a storyboard, I animated each element to be interesting and dynamic without distracting from the content. Instead, the animations were intended to emphasize key information at appropriate times. When there were long stretches without graphics, I made suggestion for additional supporting animations. I also cut the videos and smoothed out transitions between takes.

Product

The final videos feature basic shapes, bright colors, and simple illustrations to break down complex topics, making them easy to understand.

One of the videos — How Children Learn to Read, with Margaret Goldberg — won a silver Telly Award in 2025 for simplifying "complex content through engaging visuals."
